FOODISH IDEAS

This month I reflect on Egypt in better days with pictures and descriptions from my 2005 to Cairo and beyond.

March pages will be filled with pictures and journal entries from a trip through Thailand.
In a stew - let's explore the wonderful world of stews! This month I outline  seafood, chicken and beef stews to get you started on some very satisfying winter dishes.   As always I'd love to have your version of a good stew - especially if you happen to have a good posole stew with pork and green chile.  I know all you New Mexico readers can help me out here.

Next month I want to explore all things Thai. Foodish ideas will heat up with fiery chili peppers, sweeten the pot with mango and  chill out with creamy coconut milk.

BIG BROAD ABROAD

Today is Groundhog day and Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring – Whew!  I don’t know about you but I’m ready for some sunshine, budding trees and flowers, open windows!  And February brings us a plethora of opportunities to learn, laugh, labor and lounge. For starters, it’s Black History Month and there are exhibitions and events going on in cities all around the country.  This year’s theme is The History of Black Economic Empowerment. This is excellent timing, because a great many of us are seeking economic empowerment right now and there are lessons to be learned!  Of course we have the Super Bowl coming up, a chance to revel in the skill and talent of the people who create those great commercials.  Then, February 8th is Boy Scout Day – to be celebrated heartily by young scouts, old scoutmasters and friends of Dorothy/Frodo. Then on the 14th of February, which is of course Valentine’s day, there will be an obscene amount of money spent on flowers, candy, dining and engagement rings…as there should be!  The Hallmark channel is already working overtime promoting their shops and products.  I believe the handmade cards are always the best – but not the most expedient. For those of us with time on our hands, making valentines can be a labor of love.  Presidents’ day falls on the 21st and we can celebrate both Lincoln and Washington across the nation by visiting the fine museums and monuments praising them, or by fighting for a glorious cause, or by laying on the couch with a bag of chips watching Raymond Massey play Lincoln kinda creepy.

For a day by day list of some pretty hilarious holidays, check out http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/february.htm which includes such great days as;  Random Acts of Kindness Day on the 17th and Hoodie Hoo Day on the 20th.

As far as Big Broad goes (and she’s been known to go pretty far) February is about making stews (foodish ideas), Making plans (What a trip), and Making a discovery: Papa Neutrino  (Eat, Play, Sloth). I hope you have found ways to battle the winter blahs and bring joy and adventure into your lives.  Please feel free to email any suggestions you have for the website – or to help all of us forge ahead towards Spring.

Big Love from Big Broad
